Reflections

In this section, I have spent some time reflecting and reviewing some of the more unique learning experiences I have had throughout the duration of the Avalanche Science Program. This includes:

  • guest lectures.
  • specialized tours of avalanche safety programs around Colorado.
  • field instruction on using snow research tools.
  • the unique experience to give forecast briefings and presentations in front of leaders in the industry.
  • experiences I may have not had if it weren't for the program.

Field Work

A large focus throughout the program has been hands-on learning through fieldwork while on the snow.

Arapahoe Basin Tour

During one of our Leadville sessions the year two students made a field trip to tour Arapahoe Basins newly installed explosives tram system with Ryan Evanczyk, Arapahoe Basins director of snow safety.

CDOT Tour

Just as we took a tour of Arapahoe Basin during one of our sessions we took a tour of some of CDOTs avalanche mitigation methods and tools.

Guest Presentations

Throughout year 1 and especially year 2 we have had a number of guest presenters giving talks and lectures from a variety of technical backgrounds.

Public Speaking

Coming into this program I can say with certainty that speaking in front of large groups of people was an aspect of the program I was uncomfortable with.

Transitioning (snowboard to skis)

My parents taught me to ski when I was very young but I switched to snowboarding when I was eight years old and haven't skied since then.
